Vancouver, B.C. (December 19, 2000):
Here we go one more time! Government raising the
spectre, or trial balloon, of that "guaranteed
annual income" for us Canadians. Someone has once
again decided that we Canadians need a lifetime
of financial care. Over the years, we've had a
few different flavours of this balloon flown in
our midst, many having fallen flat from the skies.
It seems to me that with all this talk of being
taken care of from cradle to grave we Canadians
are well advised to enlist a sufficient number
of taxpayers who, contrary to popular beliefs,
don't expect to have need for this benefit and
have the drive, incentive and impeccable work
ethic to support the massive and open-ended tax
funding regime for those who willingly resign
their fate to government. I am not referring to
Canadians who through an unfortunate circumstance,
such as a disability or accident, truly need our
assistance, be it short or long-term.
I am diligently trying to contribute to this
notion by teaching my children the concept of
financial accountability and responsibility. One
that comes to mind is that they have to work doubly
hard to pay for all the monetary sins that we
continue to create and accumulate on their behalf
without their representation. In British Columbia
alone, we need not look any further than the wasted
millions of our hard earned tax dollars that seep
out of Victoria's government doors on a daily
basis.
If only our children could tell us what they
think of our vision! Here's a novel idea - let's
ask them!
That's my perspective. I'd like to hear yours
or that of children you know.
